The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Lowe's, the Copper Merger or The Peanut Butter Manifesto

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • An earnings warning from Lowe's (LOW)...
  • The announcement that Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is going to acquire Phelps Dodge (PD) to create the largest publicly traded copper company...
  • Some potential turmoil inside Yahoo (YHOO) as a memo called "The Peanut Butter Manifesto" suggests Yahoo is spread too thin...
  • A bid by the Nasdaq Stock Market (NDAQ) to buy the London Stock Exchange...(note - it appears the offer is being rejected...)

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - F.D.A. Will Allow Breast Implants Made of Silicone...as discussed here back in August this offers a benefit to Allergan (AGN) and Mentor Corp. (MNT), which are poised to gap higher at the open, but that is not why it is biggest news today...it is for the sheer entertainment value I had this morning as I watched CNBC and saw Joe Kernen try to describe the "disadvantages" of saline implants to Becky Quick...

I think the copper merger is way bigger news than this. Well, depending on what you mean by "big". The copper merger was $25.9 billion. Not to mention it has the potential to increase copper prices even more.
