The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Mattel's Safety Probe, Stents, or Apple's iTune Dispute
Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...
- A safety probe for Mattel (MAT) as the Consumer Product Safety Commission investigates "whether Mattel "knowingly" withheld information regarding potential safety risks associated with its toys that were involved in a major recall last month"...
- Research that suggest that drug-coated heart stents, such as those made by Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Boston Scientific (BSX), "may not be as dangerous as previously thought"...
- An article that says "an experimental drug from Eli Lilly (LLY) reduced schizophrenia symptoms without the serious side effects of current treatments"...
- Potentially encouraging results for Merck & Co.'s (MRK) experimental cholesterol drug Cordaptive...
- A dispute between Apple (AAPL) and NBC that has resulted in shows being pulled from iTunes online store...
- Reports that say Hurricane Felix won't pose a risk to energy infrastructure...

- The rising cost of milk as it is noted that "global milk prices have doubled over the last two years"...
- Word that Merrill Lynch economists "see a 65% chance of a U.S. recession"...
- A test for the credit markets as "banks try to entice investors to buy $24 billion in loans and bonds to pay for the sale of the First Data Corporation, the credit card payments processor, to the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts"...
While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Three bears, now lion, try to leave zoo...according to the article, "A lion escaped from its cage at a Kazakh zoo over the weekend"..."Just a month ago, three bears broke out of their enclosure in the same zoo"...
Ah yes, just another example of the disturbing pattern of animals outsmarting us. Just to keep everyone on the same page, we have recently seen - an alligator escape, a monkey escape (twice), a red panda that outwitted its human captors, and (of course) those scientists who kept getting outsmarted by the great ape...
