The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not PPI, HD, or WMT

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • A lower-than-expected Producer Price Index...both the overall PPI and the "core" number were lower than expected...
  • Retail sales data, which combined with the PPI report, was said to bump up stock futures "on hopes for a near-term cut in interest rates from the Federal Reserve"...
  • Better-than-expected earnings from Wal-Mart Stores (WMT)...
  • A lackluster earnings report from Home Depot (HD)...they missed by two cents and discussed the sluggish home-improvement market...
  • A look into Walt Disney (DIS) and FedEx (FDX) with skepticism on the DIS and optimism on FDX...
  • Details on the buzz around Sun Microsystems (SUNW) as the company opens up Java to be combined with Linux...
  • Upbeat comments on the defense sector...while Rumsfeld's departure is said to create uncertainty, Standard & Poor's expects "that actual damage to the defense budget will be very limited"...L-3 Communications (LLL) is singled out as their favorite pick...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is going (someday) to be related to this - French climber scales Portugal's tallest building...let's see - a man that usually makes "unauthorized" climbs "without the use of tools or safety devices"...uh - don't we know how this is going end?
