The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Or Mattel's New Toy Recall

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Disappointing comments from Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) as the company cut its forecast and said "that worldwide economic woes pressured the retailer's second-quarter results and will continue to do so for the rest of the year"...
  • A mixed earnings report from Home Depot (HD)...the company "backed its forecast for the year" but they "believe the housing and home-improvement markets will remain soft into 2008"...
  • PPI data..."wholesale prices increased a larger-than-expected 0.6% in July"...
  • Rumors of yet another toy recall from Mattel Inc. (MAT)...official details of the recalled toy haven't been released but it is said it "is being recalled because its paint may contain excessive amounts of lead"...
  • Questions of potential insider trading at American Home Mortgage Investment (AHMIQ)...
  • A look into wave energy as the next alternative energy hot spot...
  • Some "good news" for Yahoo (YHOO) as a study "reported that Yahoo surpassed Google (GOOG) in customer satisfaction for the first time"...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Three-tonne meteorite stolen in Russia...according to the article, "Russian police were combing the northern Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk on Friday for a three-tonne meteorite that has disappeared from under the nose of its keepers"...

If the fact that someone "stealthily" made off with a three-tonne rock, which was a part of the "Tunguska event", is astonishing, considered this - "it disappeared back in June". Officials are now trying to figure out where the rock went and why no one noticed until now...

I can't decide - is this more like that scene from the movie Spaceballs where Mel Brooks directs the men to "comb the desert" or more along the lines of...
