The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Activision, E-Trade Financial, Recession Fears, Lennar or Buffett's Bond Bid

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • A shake-up for the video-game area as Vivendi buys a controlling stake in Activision (AVTI) to form Activision Blizzard...this combines "Guitar Hero" and "World of Warcraft" and is said to pose a challenge to industry leader Electronics Arts (ERTS)...
  • A look into the drop in oil ahead of the OPEC meeting...
  • Warren Buffett's purchase of high-yielding bonds from TXU Corp...
  • A downgrade for E-Trade Financial (ETFC)...
  • Comments from Eric Rosengren at the Boston Fed that "the foreclosure crisis in subprime mortgages will get worse before it gets better"...
  • A downbeat outlook as it is said - "U.S. corporate profits are in a recession, and the entire economy may not be far behind"...
  • A look into analyst ratings...
  • A real estate deal between Lennar Corp.(LEN) and a group owned by Morgan Stanley (MS)...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this pair -

  • Dublin beer bandit raids Guinness - "Irish police were hunting for a beer bandit who stole 450 full kegs from the Guinness brewery...National police said a lone man drove into the brewery...and hitched his truck to a fully loaded trailer awaiting delivery to city pubs"...
  • Australian thieves walk off with Christmas hams, bacon - "a gang of Australian thieves who stole 16 tonnes of ham and bacon from a Sydney warehouse and left a festive thank-you note scrawled on the wall"...

The article on the Guinness theft went on to say - "Police said it would be difficult for the thief to sell the stolen beer without attracting attention, unless he has criminal associates who own a network of pubs"...

Sell it? I think the two stories are related - someone is planning one big party...
