The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Hewlett-Packard, Housing Starts or Starbucks

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Better-than-expected earnings from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) that were, however, overshadowed by news of a "formal" SEC probe...
  • Data from the housing market that showed housing starts dropped their lowest levels since 1997...
  • Earnings from Gap Inc. (GPS) ...
  • A disappointing earnings report from Starbucks (SBUX) that has the shares poised to gap lower at the open...
  • Some skepticism [subscription required] on home-building stocks as it is said "Investors sniffing for a bottom in the housing market need to be careful where they put their noses"...
  • A push by Microsoft (MSFT) to build citywide Wi-Fi networks...
  • Some mild skepticism on Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN) as it is suggested the stocks have run up a bit too much...though it quotes one analyst who says that a "bird-flu panic or another natural disaster...could be a buying opportunity"...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Gamers battle the elements to get new PS3...thousands have lined up outside stores, some camped out for days, to get a chance to buy Sony's PlayStation 3...I am worried however that some are going to be disappointed...I have heard rumors that some camped out for days were doing so under the impression that they would actually get to talk to a live, breathing woman...
