The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! Not the Monthly Employment Report, Earnings from Amazon.com or Dell Lawsuit

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • The monthly jobs report which showed U.S. payrolls grew by 111,000 while the unemployment ticked up to 4.6 percent...the payrolls number seems lower than what most had been expected...the unemployment rate was expected to remain at 4.5 percent...stock futures showed a small pop on the release...
  • Earnings from Amazon.com (AMZN)...the online retailer reported better-than-expected results but the stock is seeing some pre-open weakness...
  • Word of a lawsuit against Dell (DELL)...the suit "alleges that Dell failed to properly account for and disclose quarterly rebates from Intel (INTC)"...
  • A warning from Ericsson (ERIC)...
  • A report that says the futures market is pointing to higher oil prices...
  • Downbeat comments on Amazon.com (AMZN) as it is said "better-than-expected fourth quarter was not enough to distract analysts and investors from signs that the days ahead could be challenging"...
  • More skepticism on Dell (DELL) as it is said "don't expect his return to read like the fairy tale that's occurred since Steve Jobs retook the helm at Apple (AAPL) in 1997...Dell has less to work with"...(note - this is the second skeptical article as we saw similar sentiments expressed yesterday...)

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - La. Sheriff puts tiny cameras on Tasers...according to the article, "Any time a sheriff's deputy turns off a stun gun's safety, a tiny camera will roll"...it is said this will "help defend deputies against lawsuits accusing them of excessive force and reduce any chance of such abuse by deputies" but you know this is just going to end up on YouTube...
