The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Beazer Probe or Oil Spike on Iran Tensions

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • A report that Beazer Homes (BZH) is "is being probed in connection with potential mortgage fraud"...according to BusinessWeek - "federal investigators have opened a broad criminal probe into lending practices, some financial transactions, and other dealings"...shares of Beazer are indicated down more than 10 percent...
  • Continued tensions in Iran that are pushing oil higher...as noted below, crude spiked $5 last night amid rumors of increasing tension with Iran. One bit of buzz involved a US ship while another round of chatter had to do with the British military. The rumors seemed to have settled a bit this morning and oil has given back much of that spike...
  • A look into the rising price of corn...the push for ethanol is causing corn prices to soar and causing a ripple effect through food prices...
  • Word that General Motors (GM) "will not make a first-round bid for DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler unit"...
  • Remarks from Wal-Mart's chief executive that suggest the retailer is giving up on trying to enter New York...
  • Upbeat comments on hotel and cruise stocks from Standard & Poor's...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story, courtesy of my colleague Mark Fightmaster, is this - Vigilante attack sheep guard British village...yes you read that correctly...the article says a retired farmworker has a "herd of 'highly-trained' attack sheep" that he has raised "from birth to strike without mercy"...

This story follows yesterday's recount of the first human-sheep chimera and concerns about the looming animal uprising...be afraid - be very afraid...
