The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Housing Starts, Best Buy Earnings Miss, or Terry Semel

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Stronger-than-expected data on the housing market..."home construction fell 2.1 percent in May to a rate lower than analysts expected...while building permit activity increased more than anticipated"...
  • A disappointing earnings report and lowered forecast from Best Buy (BBY)...
  • The management shakeup at Yahoo (YHOO) as the company announced that Jerry Yang was replacing Terry Semel as CEO...
  • Upbeat comments on Nicor (GAS)...it is said Nicor's "current stock valuation—below its industry peers—combined with its strong balance sheet and a dividend yield that is higher than its peers, make the shares very attractive"...
  • A look into "the world of immersive imaging"...
  • A warning of a new round of subprime mortgage concerns..."officials say they expect this second act to be longer and slower, unwinding over the next 12 to 18 months"...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Protecting real brand names in a virtual world...the story delves into the seedy underbelly of virtual world trademark infringement to explore "how much it matters whether a fake Chanel dress is worn by a human or an avatar"...reporting from Second Life, is it warned that "Virtual stores that sell unauthorized Louis Vuitton purses or Ray-Ban sunglasses could sell shoddy products"...

Is there anything worse than shoddy virtual sunglasses? They fail to keep the virtual sun out of your virtual eyes which could eventually lead to virtual blindness. Oh, the virtual humanity...
