The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Shanghai Selloff, Flextronics' Acquisition or Nexavar

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Another plunge in the Shanghai Composite..."China's main stock index tumbled 8.3 percent Monday"...
  • Word that Flextronics International (FLEX) will acquire Solectron Corp. (SLR)...
  • Continued chatter about Apple's (AAPL) iPhone...
  • Continued chatter about the Bancroft family, Dow Jones & Co. (DJ), Rupert Murdoch, and News Corp's (NWS)...
  • Positive developments for Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX) and Bayer AG...it is said their Kidney cancer drug Nexavar "is also effective in prolonging the survival of liver cancer patients, according to a new study"...
  • A column that says "Why Gas Prices Will Stay High"...
  • A shakeup at Palm (PALM) as the company agrees "to sell a 25% stake to a private-equity group and said it would distribute $940 million to investors who own stock in the manufacturer of handheld device makers"...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Christmas light scammer gets jail...at first glance, the story of a woman "accused of fleecing more than 70 investors out of more than $56,000 by claiming she made cylindrical trim that keeps Christmas lights concealed until they are needed" might not seem "biggest-news" worthy but there is one additional quote that really sets this apart - "a sister who worked at the Salt Lake County jail rounded up people there to invest in 'Hide-A-Light'"....

She scammed people who actually work at the jail!?!?!? What was she thinking? That seems like a bad idea on multiple levels. Not only does it seem like that is a good way to get caught but do you really want to risk having the people you scammed having an influence over your incarceration time?
