The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Earnings from Google and Microsoft or Harry Potter

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • An earnings miss from Google (GOOG)...earnings jumped "more than 28% in the second quarter, though the bottom line came in slightly beneath Wall Street's expectations"...
  • Inline earnings from Microsoft (MSFT)..."quarterly results, including higher-than-anticipated revenue, were due largely to products such as the recently released Office suite of software applications and Vista operating system"...
  • Earnings from Citigroup (C)..."strong international growth fueled a higher-than-expected 18 percent increase in quarterly profit"...
  • The buzz about Harry Potter...
  • A report on Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) stocks that says "at least nine are trading way below their fair market"...
  • Chatter about the Dow's push above 14,000...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Woman finds black widow spider in grapes...continuing this week's "scary bug" theme we have the story of Judy Reardon who found a black widow spider in a box of grapes she just bought...

The reason this tops the news today is for this quote - "she contacted the supplier of the grapes in California, and was told this happens about once a year..."

P.S. - It turns out that my colleague Elizabeth "I Fear No Fly" Harrow has a real spider phobia...someone should warn her about this...
