The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not GM's Charge, Garmin's Bid Topped, Crocs Options, Alibaba.com, or Beer Wars

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • A larger-than-expected loss and $39 billion charge at General Motors (GM)...
  • Warnings that oil could drop quickly as it is said "that the oil market looks overheated, and a number of factors could puncture the price bubble"...
  • A counter-bid for Tele Atlas from TomTom that tops Garmin's (GRMN) recent bid...
  • Option trading [subscription required] on Crocs Inc.(CROX) that leads some to believe that traders "see no upside past $50"...
  • Concerns [subscription required] that the subprime- mortgage woes may hit Morgan Stanley (MS)...
  • A slide in the dollar "after Chinese officials signaled plans to diversify the nation's $1.43 trillion of foreign exchange reserves"...
  • The question of "beer wars" as a new ad by Miller Brewing Co goes after Anheuser-Busch Cos. (BUD)...
  • Earnings from Time Warner (TWX) that met expectations...
  • A pullback in Alibaba.com shares following the IPO surge...
  • A study from Standard & Poor's that says "amid record levels of share repurchases, most companies have not increased shareholder value"...
  • A report that says "When Goldman Sachs Group Inc. [GS] employees cash their year-end checks, they'll have enough money to buy Bear Stearns Cos. [BSC]"...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest news has to be either this story - Die and you're under arrest! Britain's most stupid laws - where we find out that "Dying in parliament is an offence" or this pairing:

Every time I see one of these stories about "less than brilliant criminals" I inevitably end up in a conversion with someone who says "they are on drugs, what do you expect"...but yet...I still expect more...

As far as the "ridiculous British law" that is my favorite, it is a toss up between one of these -

"In the city of York it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow"
or
"A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman's helmet"
Though I am not sure I should let me wife know about the second...
