The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Wal-Mart or Productivity Growth

Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Disappointing same-store sales numbers from Wal-Mart Stores (WMT)...
  • Details on some of the other retail sales reports...
  • Data from the Labor Department that said "the productivity growth of U.S. nonfarm businesses fell to 0%"...
  • Word that Yahoo (YHOO) wants to give you a hand in the kitchen...
  • Some skepticism about SUV and pickup sales...
  • Some upbeat comments as it is said - "With gas prices down and confidence in the economy up, it looks like shoppers will be out in force—which should, in turn, boost the economy"...
  • Some skepticism [subscription required] on Campbell Soup (CPB) as it is noted the shares have done well but says "with anxieties over a slowing economy fading and other soup makers nipping at their heels, Campbell's stock could languish"...
  • Rumors that Biomet (BMET) is in takeout talks...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is - Nearly 80 stolen garden gnomes discovered in central France...while I normally try not to mix political/special interest topics in this space, I feel I must chime in with my support for the gnome liberation group...I have been following the groups efforts for years (here is an old article) and am ashamed to admit that I have don't little to actually help liberate the gnomes...who is with me with taking a stand!
