The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Ethanol Endorsement or Earnings from Texas Instruments, EMC or JNJ
Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...
- Expectations that tonight's State of the Union address will give an endorsement to alternative energy as "President Bush is expected to call for a huge increase in the amount of ethanol that refiners mix with gasoline, probably double the current goal of 7.5 billion gallons by 2012"...
- An earnings report from Texas Instruments (TXN) that appeared downbeat but is being greeted by a bounce in the shares...
- Better-than-expected earnings from EMC Corp (EMC)...
- Better-than-expected earnings from Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)...
- Skepticism on the Nasdaq from Standard & Poor's as it is said that "warning signs continue to mount that a pullback or correction is coming and we would use any near-term strength to pare back equity holdings, especially those that are most extended"...
- A warning from Alcatel-Lucent (ALU)...
- A look into Pfizer's (PFE) announcement to layoff 7,800 workers amid other restructuring plans "in hopes of coping with competition from cheaper generic drugs and setbacks in developing new products"...
- A departure by Gap's (GPS) chief executive, Paul S. Pressler...
While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Promising rookie charged with having marijuana...yes, from my local paper - it would seem that one of the Cincinnati Bengals has found himself in trouble...according to the article, cornerback Johnathan Joseph "was arrested early Monday in Boone County and charged with marijuana possession"... shocking isn't it? A Cincinnati Bengal in trouble - I don't believe it...I just don't!!!
Note - for those who don't follow football, the article notes "The Bengals led the NFL in the unofficial category of players arrested with eight during the 2006 calendar year"...It's too bad Hollywood already shot a remake of the "The Longest Yard"...
