The! Biggest! News! of! the! Day! - Not Jobs Report, Vonage Verdict, or New Century
Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...
- The monthly employment report...payrolls increased 97,000 while the unemployment rate ticked lower to 4.5 percent...the growth in payrolls was "the smallest since January 2005" but "roughly in line with the forecasts"...(note - more details can also be found in the post below...)
- A setback for Vonage Holdings (VG) as a "jury found it guilty of infringing on three patents owned by rival telco Verizon (VZ)"...
- The announcement that New Century Financial Corp. (NEW) would stop accepting loan applications because "financial backers are refusing to provide access to financing"...
- Speculation that an internet access partnership between AT&T (T) and Yahoo (YHOO) may be unraveling...
- A look into the hedge funds world as it is said that "the meltdown of the subprime mortgage market is producing a who's who of winners and losers among hedge funds"...
While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story, courtesy of my colleague Mark Fightmaster, is this - Wanted: Artificial limb for handicapped panda...according to the article "An animal research center in northern China has appealed to the world for help to fashion an artificial leg for a panda that lost a limb in a fight"...
Mark felt this was truly the biggest story of the day because the loss of the paw has "directly affected her love life"...who knew Mark was such a romantic...
P.S. Yes - I know I am going to pay for that comment...
